Adelaide Sutton Gilbert, wife of Frederick W. Gilbert, a civil engineer and division superintendent for the Northern Pacific Railroad, journeyed to wherever the railroad transferred her husband. Beginning in Brainerd, MO 1881, they moved westward to Portland Oregon in 1883, to Missoula, Montana in 1885, to Coeur d'Alene, ID in 1888, and to Sprague Washington and finally to Spokane in 1891.

Chapter 1: Traveling West on the Rails
Adelaide Sutton leaves her home in Brainerd, Missouri and begins her travels west on the railroads. Traveling with her are two of her children. Come along and see what life was like on the early trains. Experience the landscape as described by Ms. Gilbert.

Chapter 2: Moving, Moving, Moving!
Adelaide and her family find themselves moving to several different states in the West, depending on her husband's work with the railroad. She experiences difficulties in the many moves as she attempts to find good hired help.

Chapter 3: Life in Spokane
In 1892 the Sutton family settles in Spokane, Washington. Several railroads, the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern, are changing the face of Spokane, and causing great excitement in the streets.
