Chapter 5 Fine Arts: Write a Song

Background

Outdoor fun and games were simple for the early settler children. They didn’t have the elaborate playground equipment available today.

Write your own song:

The children themselves made up much of the "play". Think about the words of this old children’s song:

Come all you children
Come out and play with me.
Come where the air is free
Climb up my apple tree.

Shout down my rain barrel,
Slide down my cellar door,
And we’ll be jolly friends
For evermore.

Now, make up your own song keeping the first two lines the same. Make sure your song describes the way you might "play" outdoors today, for example, skateboarding, sledding, or court ball.

Set your song to a tune you already know. Be prepared to perform your song.
