Chapter 2 Fine Arts: Railroad Idioms

Background

Idioms are figures of speech that say one thing but mean another. For example, “Drive me up the wall” means that something is really bothering you, but in your mind you may picture yourself running up a wall. We use hundreds of idioms in our everyday language without even realizing it.

Write your own idiom

Part 1

Think of some train-related idioms. Make a list of as many as you can find. Next to each idiom write the true meaning of the phrase.

Example:

“One-track mind” means that you can think of only one thing.

Next, list as many idioms as you can that are related to other modes of transportation. What do they really mean?

Part 2

Make up your own train-related idioms. Next to each idiom write the true meaning of the phrase.
