Chapter 4 Mathematics Problem Solving: Number-sense

  1. The Whitman party left St. Louis, Missouri, March 30, 1836, and arrived at the Platte River, June 3, 1836. Determine the total number of miles traveled during that time and the average number of miles traveled each day.

  2. Mrs. Whitman wrote frequently to her family and friends back home. Assume that she started with two boxes of stationery, identical except that one was white paper and the other, gray. She wrote three-page letters on the white stationery, used all the paper, and had 50 envelopes left. She wrote one-page letters on the gray stationery, used all the envelopes, and had 50 sheets left. How many sheets of paper were in each box when she started her trip?
