As the Whitmans, Spaldings, and others cross the Rocky Mountains, they fear hostile natives and disease from swarms of nearly intolerable mosquitoes. Narcissa faces a dilemma common to many other travelers on the Oregon Trail--having to discard precious items brought from home.

Lesson 5.1: Rendezvous in the Rockies
We are now at the Rocky Mountains at the encampment of Messrs. McLeod and McKay. It seems a special favor that that company has come to Rendezvous this season.

Lesson 5.2: Traveling Along Bear River
Have seen no buffalo since we left Rendezvous; have had no game of any kind except a few pieces of antelope, which an Indian gave us.

Lesson 5.3: Arrival at Fort Hall
We were hospitably entertained by Captain Thing, who keeps the fort. It was built by Captain Wyeth, a gentleman from Boston, whom we saw at Rendezvous on his way east.

Lesson 5.4: Decision to Leave Precious Items Behind
Faced with rocky, steep hills, Narcissa makes a difficult decision to leave behind a trunk that had been given to her by her sister Harriet.

Lesson 5.5: Restful Stop at Snake Fort, Boise
Being able to wash clothes for only the third time since leaving home is a welcome relief. The travelers are granted several days of rest by their guide, Mr. McLeod.
