Lesson 5.1: Anxious to Acquire Knowledge Thompson's expedition encounters the Ilthkoyape Indians of the middle Columbia Region. This tribe celebrates the arrival of salmon with dances and many celebrations. |
Lesson 5.2: A Curious Appearance Having prepared everything and ourselves about us as well as circumstances permitted and having only half a horse for our support, we readied ourselves for the voyage to the Pacific Ocean. The river before us was wholly unknown. |
Lesson 5.4: A Tribe Called Methow A chief and four young men came with horses and helped us carry the canoe to the foot of the rapid for which I gave them eight inches of tobacco that was thankfully accepted. The appearance of this tribe is the same as the last except the women are more profusely ornate with shells. |
